The polo field that becomes Coachella. A 1,000-acre property in the desert 22 miles southeast of Palm Springs, leased for festivals since 1993 and grass underfoot rather than asphalt.

Desert weather does the whole range in a day — high heat in the afternoon, genuinely cold after dark. The walk between the far stages is longer than the map suggests, and it is all grass and dust, so wear something you do not mind ruining.
